Off Centre/On Stage

Displayed at the Jameel Arts Centre, sitting on the shores of Dubai Creek, Off Centre / On Stage by Todd Reisz seeks an earlier Dubai through never-before-seen photographs from the ‘70s. Launched on 29 September, the exhibition reveals traces of Old Dubai through the photographs of architects Stephen Finch and Mark Harris.

As Dubai hosts Expo 2020, the exhibition captures a moment of early ambition for the city. Curator Todd Reisz assembles these architectural photographs into a spatial telling of a recent past that was all about the future.

When these photographs were taken, major development projects in the city had already begun – including a new airport, a deep-water seaport and a vast new hospital.

Looking at the transformation of Dubai Creek as the starting point of the city’s ambition to achieve global stature, and leading up to the construction of the World Trade Centre as the inflexion point, the exhibition points to the origins of Dubai’s role in hosting the Expo 2020.

The exhibition is free and accessible to all until March 2022.
