About Shamma Almarzooqi

Shamma is the founder of Soof Studio is an Emirati textile product studio that utilises threads and yarns to create sustainable, stylish pieces. Its latest project with UAE Year of Sustainability involves reusing pre-loved fabric to create modern wearable pieces with traditional Emirati weaving techniques.

The project focuses on reusing traditional textile materials with recognisable motifs to create wearable modern Emirati attire (Jalabiya) and a mini Jalabiya key-chain using the traditional method of Sadu weaving and craft-making. The fabrics used are a mixture of fabrics, tali yarn, and cotton yarn retrieved from the Union Day Warehouse and were specifically chosen to showcase how textile art can be sustainable and eco-friendly. These pieces pay homage to the culture of the UAE while also introducing new audiences to the textile landscape that is representative of the Emirati women in our lives.
