For ten years, she has ensured that the plastic in her home is reduced or recycled. Recently, her cousin encouraged her to start composting, emphasising that it’s an easy and cost-effective way to manage organic waste. Enthusiastic, Shereena dedicated a small area in her backyard to compost her kitchen waste: fruit peels, coffee grounds, and even tissues. Everyday, she fills the compost hole and adds dry leaves to deter pests and boost the process. In a few months, her compost will be rich in nutrients and ready for the planting season.
“We shifted from taking the trash out every day to once a week,” she says. “We don’t need overpriced plant nutrients anymore. Soon, our garden will produce delicious organic vegetables. This entire circular process starts with my kitchen scraps.”
Shereena has shared her experience with her loved ones, and is excited for more people to learn from it. She shared some tips for those new to composting:
- You don’t need to be an expert to start. The Internet is full of information on composting in houses or apartments.
- Set up an efficient routine to encourage everyone in your household to participate.
- Share your project with your community so you can update and encourage each other.
- Remember that our collective efforts help save the environment and mitigate climate change.
