In its latest on-ground activation, the Year of Sustainability inspired the public to think about climate action through cultural expression, rooted in the UAE’s rich heritage and biodiversity
The UAE Year of Sustainability launched the first activation of “Plan To Action Majlis” – a series of on-ground events with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and sustainable action among the public through engaging storytelling, activities and cultural education rooted in Emirati heritage.
Gathering at Majlis Mohammed Khalaf, Majalis Abu Dhabi, at the Citizens and Community Affairs Office of the Presidential Court, on September 4, ‘Ghaf Tales’ – the first event in the series, held in collaboration with the social enterprise The Climate Tribe – brought together kids and families with a shared purpose towards sustainable action.
Honoring the UAE’s national Ghaf tree – a symbol of resilience and sustainability – the event began with a poetry session led by renowned writer and researcher Dr. Sultan Al Ameemi, highlighting Sheikh Zayed’s dedication to the Ghaf tree as well as recounting selected poems from Emirati heritage honoring the tree. The attendees then got to hone their creative thinking skills thro2ugh a guided poetry-writing workshop in appreciation of the Ghaf tree, followed by an immersive storytelling session by writer Fatima Al Hammadi. Families and kids were also given seeds to encourage tree-planting, highlighting the family’s role in preserving the heritage of the Ghaf tree.
